ABOUT MALAYSIA

Malaysia is a land of ancient rainforests, tropical islands, and incredible wildlife. Its jungles are among the oldest in the world, filled with orangutans, hornbills, sun bears, rare flowers, and countless unique species. From dense emerald forests to coral-rich seas, Malaysia offers breathtaking diversity in every direction.

Yet these ecosystems face growing threats from deforestation, habitat destruction, and environmental change. Protecting Malaysia’s biodiversity is essential for preserving one of the planet’s richest natural wonders.

For artists, Malaysia offers endless inspiration: lush jungle textures, brilliant birds, dramatic landscapes, and a vibrant tropical atmosphere. To paint and draw Malaysia is to celebrate the beauty, mystery, and life of nature at its most abundant.

Animal Neighbours Project’s mission is to improve relationships between people and animals living in shared spaces, creating safer, more compassionate environments for both communities and wildlife. Based in Malaysia, ANP focuses on practical, community-driven solutions that address the root causes of human-wildlife conflict, including misunderstanding of animal behaviour, lack of awareness on humane coexistence practices, and challenges faced by communities living alongside urban wildlife.

In practice, this means combining:

  • Community-based coexistence initiatives that support both people and urban wildlife
  • Research and field-based approaches to better understand human-wildlife interactions and conflict areas
  • Education and awareness programmes that promote empathy, responsible behaviour, and humane treatment towards animals
  • Sustainable, long-term solutions that improve animal welfare, public understanding, and community wellbeing together

OUR ART WEEK PROGRAM

Each day is thoughtfully designed to blend artistic practice, collaboration, and impact:

Day 1:  Welcome in Kuala Lumpur

Monday, 6 September

Your Malaysian adventure begins in the vibrant capital city of Kuala Lumpur. Artists from around the world arrive and gather at our comfortable hotel in the heart of the city.

After your journey, relax by the swimming pool, enjoy the tropical atmosphere, and get to know your fellow artists. This is the perfect moment to settle in, start your travel sketchbook, and prepare for the inspiring days ahead.

Creative Inspiration: Urban landscapes, colorful street scenes, tropical gardens, and the excitement of a new adventure.

Day 2:  Meet the Orang Asli & Explore Batu Caves

Tuesday, 7 September

Today you will step into the world of the Orang Asli, the indigenous people of Malaysia. We begin with a visit to the Orang Asli Museum, where you will discover the traditions, stories, and cultural heritage of Malaysia’s first inhabitants.

Next, we travel to a local Orang Asli village, where you will meet the community and experience daily life firsthand. Watch traditional woodcarving, farming activities, and weaving techniques. You will even have the opportunity to create your own woven headpiece under the guidance of local artisans.

The day continues with demonstrations of traditional hunting and fishing techniques before we visit the spectacular Batu Caves, one of Malaysia’s most iconic cultural landmarks, famous for its colorful Hindu temples and towering golden statue.

Creative Inspiration: Indigenous portraits, traditional crafts, cultural storytelling, vibrant colors, and dramatic cave architecture.

Day 3:  Into the Rainforest of Endau Rompin

Wednesday, 8 September

Today we leave the city behind and journey deep into one of Malaysia’s oldest and most untouched rainforests: Endau Rompin National Park.

For the next two nights, your home will be a comfortable rainforest lodge surrounded by jungle sounds and tropical greenery. Here, nature becomes your studio.

As evening falls, we head out on a guided jungle walk. The rainforest transforms after sunset as nocturnal creatures emerge and the forest comes alive with sounds and movement.

Creative Inspiration: Ancient trees, jungle textures, rainforest light, exotic plants, and the mystery of the night forest.

Day 4:  River Cruise, Waterfalls & Wildlife

Thursday, 9 September

Wake up to the sounds of the rainforest and embark on a peaceful river cruise through the protected waters of Taman Negeri Rompin.

Listen for the calls of wild gibbons echoing through the forest canopy and watch for wildlife along the riverbanks. Surrounded by untouched jungle, you’ll discover endless inspiration for sketches and photography.

In the afternoon, we hike through the rainforest to the spectacular Seri Mahkota Waterfall. Here, crystal-clear water cascades into a natural pool where you can swim, relax, sketch, or simply absorb the beauty around you.

For those who wish, there may be time for an additional jungle trek along a trail known for elephant migrations and rare wildlife sightings.

Creative Inspiration: Waterfalls, jungle rivers, wildlife, tropical biodiversity, and the serene beauty of untouched nature.

Day 5 & 6:  Tropical Paradise on Tioman Island

Friday, 10 September & Saturday, 11 September

From rainforest to island paradise.

We travel to the legendary island of Tioman, often described as one of the world’s most beautiful tropical islands. Between May and September, sea turtles visit its shores, making this a special destination for wildlife lovers and conservation-minded artists.

Your accommodation consists of charming wooden beach chalets nestled among palm trees and overlooking turquoise waters.

Spend your days snorkeling among colorful coral reefs, exploring jungle trails, searching for sea turtles, or simply relaxing on powder-white beaches with your sketchbook.

There is no rush here. Just nature, creativity, and the rhythm of island life.

Creative Inspiration: Sea turtles, coral reefs, tropical beaches, island wildlife, ocean colors, and spectacular sunsets.

Day 7:  Return to Kuala Lumpur & Botanical Gardens

Sunday, 12 September

After our island adventure, we return to Kuala Lumpur for the final stage of our Art Week.

In the afternoon, we visit the beautiful Perdana Botanical Gardens, a lush tropical oasis in the middle of the city. Wander among exotic plants, flowering trees, and peaceful pathways while gathering ideas for future paintings and collections.

Creative Inspiration: Tropical flowers, botanical studies, color palettes, and nature details.

Day 8:  A Day to Create, Reflect & Explore

Monday, 13 September

Our final day is yours to enjoy at your own pace.

Return to the Perdana Botanical Gardens to sketch, paint, photograph, or simply reflect on the experiences of the past week. Visit the Orchid Garden, Hibiscus Garden, Butterfly Park, or Bird Park, all located nearby.

This is the perfect moment to review your sketches, organize your references, and begin imagining the artworks that will emerge from this extraordinary journey.

As your Art Week comes to an end, you leave with far more than photographs—you leave with stories, memories, creative inspiration, and a deeper connection to Malaysia’s people, wildlife, and natural beauty.

Creative Inspiration: Birds, butterflies, orchids, tropical flora, and the countless ideas collected throughout the journey.
